Just One More Chapter...
A Book Review
My favorite game is “how many chapters can I read in one night.” I LOVE to read historical fiction. Reading is my therapy. It forces me to be quiet in a world that no longer makes a place for that. There is something about a book that lets you travel without moving your feet. And then, before you know it, you’ve turned the last page and your hoping for a sequel.
That is exactly how I felt while reading the Land of the Lone Star series by Tracie Peterson. She is an amazing historical and contemporary author that will not leave her readers disappointed. In this three-book series, you will be transported back into time during the Civil War.
Chasing the Sun
In the first book, Chasing the Sun, you will sympathize with Hannah Dandridge as she tries to raise her brother when it’s presumed that her father is dead. While trying to survive, a young man shows up on the ranch claiming the land belongs to him! The plot thickens as her father’s business partner arrives at the ranch and begins to pressure Hannah into a marriage of convenience. She wonders if marrying a man she doesn’t love would solve her problems while trying desperately not to fall in love with William. I was completely caught up in this novel of a difficult time in our history, romance, suspense, and betrayal. The author portrays life during the Civil War in Texas and her writing presents a strong family that will stick together in difficult times. As a southern belle in the old west, Hannah is a character I would have loved to know.
Touching the Sky
When the second book, Touching the Sky, arrived on my doorstep I was ecstatic! I could not put the book down. I was falling in love with handsome Captain Brandon Reid, along with Laura. While the people of the South are licking their wounds from their loss in the Civil War, Laura and Captain Brandon find themselves supporting the education of the “colored” people who have moved to their town. The family drama begins when Laura’s sister marries a Confederate soldier and life is not what it appears. Laura finds herself caught between the man she loves and the sister she is desperate to protect. These books will leave you anticipating the next book before you have even finished reading it!
Taming the Wind
Taming the Wind is the final book in the “Land of the Lone Star” trilogy. It follows the story of Carissa Lowe, a young widow with a small daughter. After an abusive marriage, she is unable to trust her heart again but finds that she cannot help falling in love with the man who saved her life. But love is never easy and, although this book was a little predictable, the characters and the actions held my attention to the very end.
Once again, Tracie Peterson made her characters believable, the plot full of action, and demonstrated the faithfulness of God.
