A Thanksgiving Story
Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.” And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence.” Exodus 33:18-19
Moses’ encounter with God in this biblical scene is unmatched in scripture. Why did Moses get to experience the glory of God? Maybe because he had the guts enough to ask.
As we celebrate our Thanksgiving season I am reminded of all the blessings from the Lord. All the prayers that were answered...all because I asked.
The greatest gift that God has given us is the power of prayer. Prayer is talking to God, and act of worship, and it reinforces our need for Him. It’s a powerful weapon! Jesus’ own disciples never asked to raise the dead, or preach the best sermon, yet they did say “Lord, teach us to pray.” So what does prayer have to do with Thanksgiving?
Probably like most of you, it takes days to prepare for our large family Thanksgiving Day celebration. We have cleaned, battled the crowds at the grocery store, washed and ironed all the festive tablecloths, pulled out all my decorations, and cleaned some more. In the middle of all the laundry, dogs barking, working all night (with little sleep), and holiday prep work I realized that I had many years ago prayed for what I have now.
I remember, while in my teen years, praying for a Christian husband. I remember praying for a man who not only loves the Lord but would love me and a very large family. Little did I know that when Walter sat beside me in class that he would one day be by my side... as we do this thing called life together.
I remember praying that one day we would own a home. We were married so young, without any savings, with babies coming along...almost yearly. How on earth could we possibly save for a home when we could barely put food on the table? We would pray together for provision...a miracle. And today, as I swept the floors of the (3rd) house we now own, I couldn’t help but thank the Lord for what I have now.
I remember praying that God would bless Jesse and Kyrsten with a child. And today, in the middle of my holiday craziness, I said thank you Lord as I kissed my beautiful grandbaby Lily (who happened to stop by and see her Grammy). God is so good!
While starting yet another load of laundry, and trying to encourage Victoria to get her room cleaned up, I said a quiet thanks to the Lord for yet another prayer answered...a debt free adoption. As most of you know we adopted four children from the Ukraine several years ago. Adoption is more expensive than we ever imagined. I remember laying in bed on a Wednesday night...praying with Walter for a miracle. We were $42,000 short and needed the money quickly. We had an appointment with the bank, but we truly believed that God could allow us to adopt debt free. We prayed for months. And our prayers were answered when on Friday morning a $45,000 check, from a total stranger, was delivered to our home. God is always on time!
On this Thanksgiving Eve, as I write this blog, I think of all the prayers God answered. He healed my son, when they said he would not live through the night. He gave me a wonderful job with hours that work well with this large family. I think of the friends He placed in my life, the creative moms in our homeschool co-op group, our loving church family and even the special teachers who work with Anna in her life skills program. Yes, I remember the days that I prayed for what I have now.
I realize that life can be hard. We all experience grief, loss, moments that knock the wind out of us...the unexpected. But my hope for you is that you will remember all of God’s blessings in your life.
