Why Your Homeschool Senior Needs a Graduation Ceremony

Along this homeschool journey, Walter and I have been privileged to meet homeschooling families from all over the world. So many families start this great homeschooling adventure with high expectations only to end with simply handing their graduating senior a transcript. How sad! After years of hard work, these teens need a graduation ceremony to celebrate their dedication. And let's be honest...we, too, are happy that little Suzy finally made it through algebra! (and we survived being their teachers!) But is planning and hosting a high school graduation ceremony worth all the time and energy? Yes!

Hard Work Needs Recognized

First, a high school graduation ceremony is a way to recognize the graduate and their parents. It is not easy to homeschool your child all the way through high school. I think of all the hours I put into researching the [right homeschool curriculum for each student's learning styles], the money that we invested in outside classes and the debates with my teens on the necessity of completing a subject (yes, even physics). My teens agonized over essays, read books that they didn't really want to read, and spent hours on science projects. Don't let all this hard work go unrecognized. You and your teen need to be celebrated!

Having a Graduation Ceremony is a Way to Say Thank You

A high school graduation ceremony is a perfect way to say thank you for all of those who supported your senior. Homeschooling typically happens at home, but think of all those who have imparted knowledge and love to your teen. I am so thankful for my dad who has spent time reading with my kids, going on field trips, and driving them to art class when I had to go to work. I am so grateful to our homeschool co-op teachers who have inspired and challenged by children throughout the years. Hosting a graduation ceremony is a way to recognize and thank all of those who have supported your homeschool journey.

High School Graduation Marks a Milestone

A high school graduation ceremony is a right of passage. As our homeschool co-op prepared for our graduation ceremony this year I reminded our seniors that this marked a huge milestone in their life. They are no longer considered children, but young adults embarking on a new path that God has for them. It's a time of stepping into the adult life, the workforce, college or trade school, and simply preparing to eventually leave home to live on their own. A graduation ceremony is symbolic. It's the end of childhood and the beginning of adulthood.

Graduation Gives Your Graduate Hope and Encouragement

A high school graduation ceremony is not only for the seniors and their families but, rather it allows other homeschool families a glimpse of hope. It encourages other families that may need to rededicate and purpose in their hearts the call to homeschool all the way to high school graduation. That all of their hard work, frustrating moments, and effort will eventually pay off. It's a reminder that childhood doesn't last forever. Homeschooling does have an endpoint. A graduation ceremony encourages other families that they, too, can complete the race that has been set before them.

A High School Graduation will Make Memories for a Lifetime

A high school graduation ceremony will give your families memories to talk about for years to come. There is something special about putting on a cap and gown, walking down the aisle, and taking all those family photos that will hold significance to your family. The memory of receiving their diploma and hugging mom and dad will stay in their hearts and minds forever.

Hosting a high school graduation ceremony can be as simple or grand as your family chooses. Publicly recognizing your senior, along with all those who imparted into their lives, will be worth all the time and effort that it will take to prepare for such a celebration. It will give you a chance to say thank you to family, friends, and teachers as well as encouraging other homeschool families to continue their journey. High school graduation is a milestone in the life of the individual that will give you and your family long lasting memories.
