Whether you are an introvert or extrovert, whether you live in a city or rural area, whether your kids are just hitting school age or about to graduate, there is homeschooling encouragement and support to be found in community.

Course Overview: This course will focus on the ability to communicate ideas and experiences effectively. Students will work in a variety of genres, some conventional and some unconventional. They will learn to recognize and write narratives, informative essays, division/classification, reflection, and persuasive texts. The course will include a series of short assignments that will feed into longer assignments. We will consider audience, tone, organization, word choice, and structure as we read sample texts and revise our own.Course Objectives:Write persuasive texts using valid reasoning and evidence Write expository/informative texts clearly and accurately Write narratives (fiction or non-fiction) that use the five senses and appropriate structure Plan and organize ideas appropriate to the assignment and purpose Conduct research (primary and secondary) and analyze their credibility Incorporate outside sources into own writing Use revision and editing techniques during the drafting processSample Timeline for Ten Week Writing CourseWeeks 1-3 Narrative: Learn various prewriting strategies Read narratives focus on word choice, descriptions, tone, audience, setting, etc. Review grammar basics (punctuation, verb tense) Practice sensory writing (“show don’t tell”) and effective descriptions Write own narrativeWeeks 4-6 Informative/Expository: Learn how to narrow down a topic Read sample essays Discuss effective thesis statements, organization, introductions, and conclusions Learn various revision and editing strategies Write own informative paper (with or without research)Weeks 7-10 Persuasive/Argumentative: Conduct secondary research and understand what makes a source credible Discuss how to incorporate outside sources effectively Learn how to create topic sentences and effectively organize points Read and evaluate sample arguments Write own research based persuasive papercontact Danielle: dlweber21@gmail.com for more information
