The Alternative Learning Center (TALC) is a secular homeschooling community and cooperative based in Columbia County, New York. The TALC mission is to provide a place where homeschooling families meet to support each other and learn together in an inclusive environment. Membership includes approximately 20-30 families from Columbia, Berkshire, Greene, Ulster, Rensselaer, and surrounding counties. Families meet once a week at a rented facility, which has a gym, classrooms, a kitchen, playing fields, tennis courts, a playroom for toddlers, and an outdoor playground. The facility is wheelchair accessible. Schedules are comprised of an autumn session and a spring session, each running approximately 13 weeks. Hours are Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. TALC is currently accepting new members. Each season begins with an Opening Day, which includes introduction of new members, brief announcements, and activities for the children. Mid-semester fun day is a day of activities, though it is sometimes used as a make-up day in case of cancellations. Display Day is the last day of each season, when students display the work they’ve done and give performances and presentations.TALC is not a drop-off center. If you are unable to accompany your child throughout the entire day at TALC, please appoint a guardian to do so. This can be another adult member of your family, a babysitter, or another TALC member. As TALC is a family-based cooperative in which members’ contributions and presence are vital, it is expected that parents attend on a regular basis.
